Meet the Author

Myself and my friend Craig Silvey, author of Honeybee and Jasper Jones, at Adelaide Writers’ Week 2021

Hello there! Welcome to my shiny new book blog! My name is Leigh Briar, I’m a 23-year-old lover of all things literary! I’m an emerging writer (meaning I haven’t published a whole lot yet) living on Kaurna land in Adelaide, South Australia. I have loved to read and write more or less for as long as I can remember, immersing myself in all manner of worlds from early childhood, never growing out of that sense of imaginative wonder.

I have been writing more or less since I learned how to hold a pencil. Countless notebooks, writing pads, and sheets of paper stapled together were home to stories of wizards losing their magic wands and children cursed by ancient spirits – now it’s a full Google Drive that holds most of my scribblings narrated by lesbian monster hunters and gruesome fairy tale characters. I’ve also created a handful of zines on the relationship between emotional healing and the written word, with more plans somewhere in that Google Drive. More info on those coming to the blog soon!

I would love to be able to tell you my favourite genres to read but I will honestly pick up just about anything! From fantasy and science fiction to romance and historical fiction, horror and thriller to contemporary literary fiction, poetry to political nonfiction. You name it, I’ll read it. I do, however, tend to primarily write horror stories in my short fiction and fantasy in long-form (although I’m currently working on a contemporary YA novel!). I also write regular poetry, some of which I hope to share on this blog.

My intentions for this blog are varied. In part, this is a means of building my online author profile, and to formalise the book reviews I write beyond Goodreads and a few scattered ones posted to my Instagram. I am also hoping this will encourage me to write regularly, and to keep my creative juices flowing — as well as keeping accountability for the writing projects I should be doing, such as my manuscript in progress that I have not been putting enough energy into.

I hope you enjoy the coming work I plan to share and I hope to hear from you! 🌹x

You can connect with me on other platforms as well! I can be found on Instagram, Twitter, and Goodreads.
